Interview with designer Stephanie Lampkin of Odylyne

i was introduced to odylyne a few months ago when my friend good friend numa used an odylyne dress in her first fashion film. i have been in love ever since. her pieces are beautiful, feminine, vintage, and modern – all at once. after interviewing stephanie lampkin, the brains behind odylyne.. i have fallen even more in love. see for yourself..

LAI: Tell me a little bit about yourself – where you grew up, when you figured out you wanted to design, etc.

SL: Ever since I was a little girl I really enjoyed the arts and anything that had to do with creating. My mom was a huge inspiration in being really girly and loving things really delicately. She went to cosmetology school, cake decorated, learned sewing and making her own fashions, took cooking lessons…the whole nine. So I was looking at her and being like, I want to be a master of all trades, and doing it perfectly like my mom. So basically, I have learned a lot of skills but the one I enjoy most is design. I grew up in Japan and here in the states. My mom was new to the states most of my childhood so that is what prompted her to learn skills to benefit her life. She instilled those same concepts in me. It was 2004 when I started to pursue design heavily…my passion still lies in graphic design and illustration..which I studied in school but fashion is my love! It only made sense in 2009 to start my own clothing line.

LAI: Where did you come up with the name “Odylyne”? What does it mean to you?

SL: Odylyne is derived from the artist Odilion Rion. It is just a more feminine play off the name. I came up with it with my fiancee at the MOMA. We were looking at one of his paintings and saw the name. After that..I started thinking of pretty names for little girls…and I came up with the name ODYLYNE. I said if I had a daughter I would name her ODYLYNE. But the clothing line came first!

LAI: When you’re working on a new line, how do you prepare?

SL: I try to become very zen in the morning before I get my day started…cup of coffee and a great playlist. Making inspiration boards…going fabric swatching…flea markets…taking a trip…all those things help with coming up with a new collection. But more importantly coming up with a theme that moves you and that inspires you is key. When you have your theme…the possibilities are endless.

LAI: Where do you pull your inspiration from? What inspires you? In fashion, and otherwise.

SL: I pull my inspiration from all over Los Angeles. I love vintage!!!!! I love what’s new on the runways for the season. I’m the type of person that can go to Napa and find inspiration in a field of grapevines. I am constantly now looking at everything and seeing what is comfortable but cool and pretty. I love pretty things. I am obsessed with anything pretty and different. I love the bohemian hippie 70′s girl. I am always trying to embody that look and feel but with a modern classy clean look.

Piculet Lace Dress

LAI: What kind of girl do you picture wearing Odylyne?

SL: A girl who appreciates styles from the past and understands that not everything needs to be tight and short. I have never been that girl. And although it might be a challenge here in the city…I think girls are starting to get it. Vintage styles are making a huge comeback and that is what we do. We want to keep the formula for what was so good before but twist it up with the easier part. I always say the girl that walks in a room with this long flowy goddess dress is the ODYLYNE girl. She understands that sexy doesn’t mean showing all the goods.

LAI: What boutiques in LA sell Odylyne, and where can you shop for Odylyne online?

SL: We sell to Madison Boutique, Planet Blue, Bleu, Belle Grey & Mesh, In Residence, and Lace here in Los Angeles. The best way to see what other stores we are in online is to go to our website: We are also excited to come to Shopbop and Revolve for the Spring!

This is so amazing and so beautiful and sexy. A woman.. as she says.”.does not need tight and short to be beautiful”. Being beautiful is just that.
