celestemichelle: An Inside Look

Another jewelry line I’m loving right now is celestemichelle. Their beautiful bold colored beads and jewels are eye-catching, and are the very definition of a statement piece. From stunning bib necklaces, to dangling earrings and stackable bracelets – celestemichelle has something for every jewelry lover.

“The DNA of the celestemichelle brand is inspired by sights, sounds, and experiences from travels around the world—Paris, London, Marrakesh, Brooklyn, Kingston, Hong Kong, Amorgos, Santorini, Phuket, Bali, Jogjakarta, and Brussels to name a few. Today celestemichelle offers a variety of trend jewelry that borrows from many cultures, and captures their essence and beauty in something tangible and accessible.”

Thanks to the wonderful team over at celestemichelle, I was able to interview the brains behind celestemichelle – Michelle Johnson.

LA Inspiration: When did you decide you wanted to design jewelry? What was the “ah-ha” moment you had when you realized this was your dream?

Michelle Johnson: I finally decided I wanted to design jewelry in October 2001. I was taking a hiatus from working and focusing on what I was going to do with my life. I found myself constantly day dreaming about my childhood days; spending time with my great grandmother Celeste in rural Jamaica, making dolls out of mango seeds, and always drawing a necklace on my doll. Those were the happiest days of life and I knew then that I had to somehow find a way to make a career doing something that makes me happy above all else.

LAI: Why did you choose to design jewelry – what is it about jewelry that made you choose it over, say, maybe being a clothing designer?

MJ: Jewelry’s sole purpose is to adorn and add beauty. Jewelry has a way of making people happy no matter what is going on in their life. As early back as I can remember, every time I got a piece of jewelry the unbridled excitement I felt was something I wanted to share with as many people as possible. I didn’t get new clothes often as a child, so when I had to change up my look I found myself creating an accessory to add sass.

LAI: For you, what goes into designing a new line?

MJ: The moments in my life, where I decide to travel, and the culture I interact with. For the last 3 collections I am celebrating unconditional love. Soft, feminine and giddy.

LAI: What inspires you when you’re in the creating process?

MJ: Romantic weather.

LAI: Do you have any advice for someone who may want to become a jewelry designer?

MJ: From my own experience I would say try getting a table at a flea market. It is such a great experience for all aspiring designers. You are surrounded by likeminded creatives. It is also an extremely rewarding experience to have someone other than a family member or friend commit to your vision.
